New Vista

“New Vista”
22” x 48”, oil on canvas

This painting was inspired by the writings of Osborne Russell who hunted and trapped in the greater Yellowstone region from 1834 through 1843. His work titled “Journal of a Trapper” is to me the finest narrative of life in these times and this region.  Even though survival was tough he had a great appreciation for the natural beauty he saw and often commented on it.

When the fur trade collapsed, Russell went on to Oregon. He enjoyed several diverse occupations: miner, merchant, judge. He passed away in Placerville, California in 1892
