“Through the Rage and the Roar”

An Ojibwe and his confederate, a French Canadian courreur des bois, meaning “runner of the woods”, choose to run the rapids rather than endure a portage. The term "courreur des bois" described a fur trader operating without a license from the French government.


The birchbark canoe, in this case an Ojibwe long-nose style, is a favorite subject of mine.
It has an inherent beauty and when combined with its functionality, it is a wonderful
work of art in itself.
