Joseph E. Velazquez
Artist
A Colorado native, Joe Velazquez combines his penchant for art with his
love of history. Focusing his work on the American Indian, settlers and various real and imaginary characters of the westward expansion, Velazquez aims to provide the viewer with a
unique glimpse of the era. "The history of the west is replete with human drama of every dimension," says Velazquez. Bringing these moments to life through art is an extremely gratifying
occupation". "I also really enjoy painting outdoors. The colors are crisp and vivid making photos anemic in comparison. There isn't a film made that can capture the range of color in
nature. And working outdoors helps tremendously when you're back in the studio". Click here to see the painting shown above in the inset.
Both painter and sculptor for 30 years, Velazquez works with a variety of mediums: oil, watercolor, charcoal and pastel for drawing and painting, clay or wax for bronze casting.
Velazquez' painting The Big Hitch was selected for the cover of the 1984 US West telephone directory. Velazquez' bronze sculpture titled Arsata received first-place honors in the 1986 North American Sculpture Exhibition. The artists' work is held in collections
throughout the US and Europe with notable interest coming from England and Germany. His work has also been acquired by the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta and the
Palm Springs Museum in California.
